Further north than Lima and seemingly reaping a lion's share of the rain in Peru, Huaraz is one of the main hiking areas in Peru (the other being Cusco, which is probably popular primarily because of it's proximity to Machu Picchu and the Inca trail, while Huaraz has better hiking). The town is, like so many, nothing of interest but the fantastic mountains and lakes of the Cordilleras Blanca and Negro have great hiking from simple day hikes up to the ten day monster of the Huayhuash.
